Smart container: IoT applied to solid waste collection

Peña-Cáceres O.J.M.; Ordinola-Ipanaque N.; Silva-Marchan H.; Chunga-Zapata E.A.; Garay-Silupu E.R. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2023)

Resumen

The purpose of a smart city is to reduce the shortcomings and public urgencies of citizens in order to provide quality, efficient and safe services. The objective of the research was to design a smart container for solid waste collection according to the level of storage through the application of the Internet of Things (IoT). The city of Piura-Peru was considered as a case study due to the high rate of solid waste that they host on a daily basis. The methodology was developed in four stages: identification of stakeholders, diagnosis of the city, identification of solid waste collection points and design of the smart container. The smart container optimizes routes, improves times and reduces solid waste collection costs by 20%. Finally, the IoT is a link for the development of cross-cutting proposals that contribute to the development and integration of a smart and sustainable city for the benefit of the population.
