Resumen
This research deals with the adsorption capacity of silver using activated carbon obtained from olive pits. The methodology was experimental, olive pits were collected and treated by chemical activation with phosphoric acid at 85% concentration. One gram of dry activated carbon was used for one liter of solution with 5 ppm of synthetic silver, then it was shaken in a bottle roller for 3 hours. During the test, aliquots of 20 ml were obtained every fifteen minutes to analyze the concentration of silver in the solution, then the calculations were made by evaluating with the Freundlich-Kuster and Langmuir isotherms. In addition, the percentage of attrition was evaluated. The tests were performed in triplicate, and were done in parallel with a commercial sample of coconut shell activated carbon. The results show that the chemical activation of olive pit has an adsorption capacity of 3.19 mg Ag/g charcoal (63.8%), silver recovery of 66.20% and 12.33% attrition. It is concluded that the olive pit activated carbon obtained by chemical activation presents adsorption capacity 20% below that obtained with the coconut shell activated carbon obtained by thermal activation.
