Resumen
The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of Fasciola hepatica in goats in Peru according to goat production areas (North Coastal Zone, Central-South Coastal Zone, and Andean-Eastern Zone) and to identify potential risk factors associated with its infection. A total of 1199 blood serum samples from Creole goats were obtained from a national serum bank provided by the National Agrarian Health Service of Peru (SENASA) and evaluated using the IDEXX Fasciolosis Verification indirect ELISA kit at the veterinary parasitology laboratory of the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. The seroprevalence of antibodies against F. hepatica was 12.18% (95% CI 10.44— 14.16), with seroprevalence rates of 3.99, 17.59, and 16.15% in the North Coastal Zone, Central-South Coastal Zone, and Andean-Eastern Coastal Zone, respectively. Chi-square and logistic regression tests demonstrated significant associations between the presence of circulating antibodies against F. hepatica and the variables goat production area (p<0.001) and altitude (p<0.001). A higher risk was found in the South-Central Coastal area (OR = 3.29) and at altitudes >2500 meters above sea level (OR = 4.09). This is the first study to evaluate the seroprevalence, distribution, and risk factors of F. hepatica in goats at the national level. ©Los autores.
