Serological prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi in domestic dogs in a rural area of Cutervo (Cajamarca, Peru)

Cuzcano-Anarcaya J.L.; Custodio S.; Vargas-Rocha L.; Verastegui M. · Revista de Investigaciones Veterinarias del Peru (2025) · DOI: 10.15381/rivep.v36i5.30142

Resumen

The aim of this study was to determine the serological prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi in domestic dogs in a community located in the northern Peruvian tropical region. Blood samples were collected and serum obtained from 41 domestic dogs in the township of San Juan de Chiple, Callayuc (Cutervo, Cajamarca), Peru. Sera were analysed by indirect hemagglutination, detecting anti-T. cruzi antibodies in 2 samples (4.9% [95% CI 0.60– 16.53]) and by Western blot, finding antibodies in 3 samples (7.3% [95% CI 1.54–19.92]). The concordance between both tests was moderate (κ = 0.363; p=0.017). The study revealed the presence of anti-T. cruzi in domestic dogs in a rural community in the northern Peruvian region, suggesting the circulation of this parasite in the canine population of the area, and constituting a risk of infection for the inhabitants.
