Semiotics and collective memory in the reinterpretation of the Chimu Hotel in Peru

Paola Medaly P.-M.; María Delia C.-P. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2026) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2026.1.1.602

Resumen

This research aimed to analyze the architectural semiotics of the Hotel Chimú and its relationship to collective memory, in order to understand its potential for reinterpretation as an articulating element of the Chimbote boardwalk. The study employed a mixed-methods approach with a predominance of qualitative elements. It was a basic research study, using a descriptive-interpretive method, a descriptive level, and a cross-sectional phenomenological design, oriented towards the symbolic understanding of the architectural space. The population consisted of users, visitors, and specialists associated with the boardwalk, and a sample of 75 participants was selected using non-probability convenience sampling. Techniques of observation, interviews, and document analysis were used, employing an architectural observation form, a semi-structured interview guide, and a historical-documentary record as instruments. Validity was determined through expert judgment, and reliability through methodological and source triangulation. The results suggest that 78% of respondents associate the Hotel Chimú with urban identity and 65% with collective memory, highlighting its value as modern heritage and its potential for symbolic reinterpretation within its context and surroundings. In conclusion, the semiotic analysis suggests that the building's restoration could contribute to revitalizing its urban significance, as well as reinforcing perceptions of identity and belonging in the city of Chimbote.
