Self-perception of malocclusions: Reference of mental states in university students

Chenta-Irigoin E.; Jiménez Torres E.A.; Farje-Gallardo C.A.; Coronel-Zubiate F.T. · Revista de Ciencias Sociales (2024) · DOI: 10.31876/rcs.v30i.42259

Resumen

The study examined the self-perception of malocclusions among university students at a university in northeastern Peru during 2023, using a quantitative and cross-sectional approach. The sample consisted of 1,879 participants, evaluated using the aesthetic dimension of the Orthodontic Treatment Need index. The results revealed that the majority of students perceived their malocclusions as mild; while a smaller percentage presented moderate or severe perceptions. However, no statistically relevant disparities were detected in self-perception according to major, gender, age or academic year. This research suggests that self-perception of malocclusions in university students is predominantly mild and is not significantly influenced by demographic or academic factors, although it is important to note that self-perception of malocclusions does not always coincide with clinical assessment. It is concluded that it is crucial to consider both the clinical and social implications of these findings, showing that the self-perception of malocclusions is a universal phenomenon among university students, regardless of their demographic profile. © (2024), (Universidad del Zulia).
