Resumen
Success in endodontic therapy largely relies on achieving a hermetic three-dimensional seal of the root canal system, a task particularly challenging in mandibular first molars due to the intricate morphology of their mesial canals. Despite the variety of obturation techniques available, debate remains regarding which method ensures a more effective seal in irregularly shaped canals. The present research compared the sealing efficiency of the single-cone and lateral condensation techniques in the apical third of mesial canals of mandibular first molars. A quantitative experimental design was applied using forty extracted teeth divided into two groups according to the obturation method. After instrumentation and filling with gutta-percha and sealer, the samples were sectioned and examined under stereomicroscopy to determine the percentage of the filled area. Both approaches produced dense and clinically acceptable obturations; however, the single-cone method achieved slightly superior sealing performance, with statistically significant differences (p < 0.05). These outcomes indicate that the single-cone technique, when combined with contemporary sealers, serves as an effective and less time-demanding alternative to lateral condensation, particularly for mesial canals exhibiting complex anatomy. Further three-dimensional and clinical investigations are recommended to substantiate these findings under in vivo conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
