Scientific Trends in Maintenance Engineering: A Bibliometric Study for Strengthening Engineering Education and Innovation (2015-2025)

Ronceros-Morales C.; Vega Mejía R. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2025) · DOI: 10.18687/leird2025.1.1.459

Resumen

Between 2015 and May 2025, research in maintenance engineering has shown sustained growth, driven by technological advances in Industry 4.0. This study performs a bibliometric analysis of scientific output recorded in the Scopus database, using the keyword: maintenance management, maintenance 4.0, and reliability, associated with digital transformation in industrial environments. Initially, 4,715 documents were identified, including scientific articles, papers, books, book chapters, and reviews. After applying thematic filters, 3,613 documents were selected (76.6% of the initial total). The results show that Italy leads the way in terms of output with 423 publications, with the Politecnico di Milano standing out as the most productive institution. In Latin America, the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná (Brazil) stands out. The most active journal was Lecture Notes in Mechanical Engineering (Germany), with 113 documents. The most frequent keyword was Industry 4.0, and the main subject area was Engineering. The predominant language was English, which favors the international projection of the works. The most cited article was Predictive Maintenance in Industry 4.0: A Systematic Literature Review, with 746 citations. The author with the highest number of publications was C. Reich (Hochschule Furtwangen, Germany), with 14 papers. The study confirms an upward trend in scientific production on smart maintenance, from 24 publications in 2015 to 230 in May 2025. These results reflect the growing interest in optimizing maintenance through emerging technologies, in line with the principles of efficiency and innovation in contemporary engineering. © LEIRD 2025.All rights reserved.
