School Violence and Self-Esteem in High School Students in a Peruvian Public Educational Institution

Adan L.C.; Sandoval C.; Fernando L.; Christian Andrew C.A. · Journal of Educational and Social Research (2026) · DOI: 10.36941/jesr-2026-0251

Resumen

The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between school violence and self-esteem in high school students in a public educational institution located in the city of Moyobamba. With respect to the methodology, it was a basic study, which followed the guidelines of a non-experimental correlational design, where the census sample comprised 158 male and female students. The instruments used were the CUVE3-ESO school violence questionnaire and the Rosenberg self-esteem scale. In descriptive terms, 68% presented high levels of school violence while 32% presented a medium or moderate level. Regarding self-esteem, 49% presented high levels, 27% medium levels and 24% low levels. In inferential terms, a correlation of .135 with a significance of .091 was identified. By dimensions, no correlations were evident either, except in the dimension related to indirect physical violence by the student body (rho=0.183, p=0.022). The results show that school violence is not related to students' self-esteem, which motivates the proposal of new research hypotheses.
