Resumen

School violence in adolescents is a complex phenomenon that requires detailed analysis for its prevention. This study describes the types and levels of violence in students of a public secondary school in Santa Clara, Lima, Peru. A quantitative approach with a non-experimental, descriptive and correlational design was used. The sample consisted of 681 students from first to fourth year of high school, 46% (313) were males and 54% (368) were females from 12 to 15 years of age, selected by means of purposive samples. The School Coexistence Questionnaire for Nonviolence (CENVI) was used, composed of five dimensions: verbal, physical, social-exclusion, technological media and teacher-student violence. The results show that 69.9% of the students perceive a low level of violence, 27.2% a moderate level and 2.9% a high level. Verbal violence and social exclusion are the most prevalent, especially in the second and third year of high school. In addition, a positive trade-off (τ=0.576) was identified between social violence and that exercised in technological media. These findings highlight the need to implement prevention strategies and intervention programs focused on the most vulnerable grades to improve school coexistence.
