Resumen
Introduction: Metabolic syndrome has become a public health problem, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases, with high prevalence rates, leading to substantial economic costs and morbidity and mortality. Objective: This study evaluated the effect of consuming Salvia hispanica (chia) flour on metabolic syndrome indicators in outpatients with dyslipidemia. Materials and Methods: An experimental community trial was conducted, initially including a sample of 37 patients aged 40 to 75 who attended the medical clinic during the 2023-2024 period. Eight patients dropped out of the study, and five were withdrawn. The final sample of 24 patients was randomly assigned to two groups: the experimental group, which received 25 g of Salvia hispanica flour daily, in addition to nutritional counseling, and the control group, which only received nutritional counseling for a period of 30 days. Metabolic syndrome indicators were assessed according to the ATPIII criteria. To evaluate differences between the control and experimental groups, Student’s t-test and Mann-Whitney U test were used. Results: After 30 days, no significant differences were found between the control and experimental groups in blood pressure (systolic: 105 mmHg and 110 ± 12 mmHg; diastolic: 65 mmHg and 70 mmHg) p ≥ 0.05, waist circumference (89 ± 10 cm and 92 ± 16 cm) p ≥ 0.05, glucose (97 ± 6 mg/dL and 95 ± 10 mg/dL) p ≥ 0.05, HDL cholesterol (60 ± 10 mg/dL and 53 ± 16 mg/dL) p ≥ 0.05, and triglycerides (96 mg/dL and 145 mg/dL) p ≥ 0.05. Conclusions: Supplementation with Salvia hispanica flour did not show effects on metabolic syndrome indicators in patients with dyslipidemia after 30 days of intervention.
