REVOLUTIONARY FEMINISM AND THE BLOOD SACRIFICE IN MAGDA PORTAL’S “THE NEW WOMAN”

Haya de la Torre R.V. · Metafora (2026) · DOI: 10.36286/mrlad.v3i6.281

Resumen

126 years after her birth, Magda Portal has become an icon of women’s empowerment for being the first woman to participate in the founding of a mass political party, the Peruvian Aprista Party (PAP). This article aims to explain the author’s contribution to the emergence of a new type of Peruvian and Indo-American woman through her collection of essays, Hacia la mujer nueva. El aprismo y la mujer. Thanks to this collection of essays, Portal has succeeded in creating a “new woman” who does not falter in the face of persecution, rape, deportation, and imprisonment, and who does not limit her actions to the domestic sphere but is capable of fighting against any form of tyranny, since, like a man, she is willing to sacrifice her life for a political ideal. This is a woman who, without renouncing her femininity, acts in her role as a militant, revolutionary, and guerrilla fighter in the APRA-led civil uprisings of the 1930s.
