A concerned reader contacted the journal regarding several issues, including image manipulation, authorship, and affiliation discrepancies. An internal investigation confirmed the presence of image manipulation in Fig. 5E and identified partial duplication between Fig. 5D of this article and Fig. 3A of another article published in Molecular Medicine (2022, 28:163, DOI: https://doi.org/10.1186/s10020-022-00597-z), authored by Cao et al. The journal contacted the authors for an explanation and the raw data; however, no satisfactory response has been received. Based on these findings, the editors have made the decision to retract the article.
