REPRESENTATION OF ILLEGAL LATIN AMERICAN IMMIGRATION TO THE UNITED STATES IN EL CORRIDO DE DANTE (2008), BY EDUARDO GONZÁLEZ VIAÑA

Mejía H.J.L. · Metafora (2023) · DOI: 10.36286/mrlad.v3i6.147

Resumen

The narrative of Eduardo González Viaña (Chepén, 1941) since the 1990s, is circumscribed in the poetics of illegal Latin American immigration to the United States. El corrido de Dante (2008) represents this fictional discursive corpus. In this sense, the objective of this research is to analyze three topics: (1) the symbolization of the main character Dante Celestino; (2) the cultural conflict between Emma and Dante Celestino; (3) the importance of the corrido, a Mexican musical genre, in the novel. To do this, socio-literary categories of immigration, border, identity, culture, subalternity, proposed by Olsson, Barnach-Calbó, Beverley and Roca will be used. All this allows us to conclude that the main character is the symbol of illegal immigrants, subjects made invisible by the hegemonic power; Emma, in the paradigm of the resistance of the cultural conflict between children born in foreign lands and illegal immigrant parents; the corrido, in the divergent, as well as homogeneous, Latin American cultural manifestations.
