Resumen

Introduction: The relationship between sleep quality and metabolic syndrome has sparked interest within the scientific community, particularly in the context of metabolic syndrome. Despite previous studies, gaps persist in understanding this connection, especially among administrative workers who face unique challenges related to their sedentary lifestyle and stressful work environment. Objective: To determine the association between sleep quality and metabolic syndrome in a group of workers. Materials and Method: A study was conducted at the Hospital II Huamanga of the Peruvian Social Security, evaluating 137 participants from the “Mi Salud Mi Vida” program. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to analyze sleep quality, while JIS criteria were applied to diagnose metabolic syndrome. Frequencies and percentages were used to describe the main variables, and Pearson’s Chi-square test (Chi2) assessed the potential association between sleep quality and metabolic syndrome. Results: Findings showed that 34,3% of participants had poor sleep quality, and 33,6% were diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. Furthermore, 78,7% of workers with poor sleep quality also had metabolic syndrome, compared to 90% with good sleep quality who did not have metabolic syndrome. Bivariate analysis using the Chi2 test yielded a p-value <0,001. Conclusion: There is a statistical association between sleep quality and metabolic syndrome in the study population.
