Resumen

Introduction: During surgeries, complications and deaths occur, which can be prevented. This circumstance prompted the World Health Organization to establish a Safe Surgery Checklist, which should be applied to reduce possible risks and favor patient safety during surgery. Objective: To identify the relationship between the application of the Safe Surgery Checklist and its usefulness according to the opinion of nurses. Methods: Quantitative study, with a correlational and cross-sectional design, carried out in the operating room of the National Institute of Neoplastic Diseases, in Lima, Peru, from September to October 2018. The study population was made up of 46 nurses. The techniques used were the survey and observation. The instruments used were the questionnaire and the observation list. The questionnaire was validated by eight experts and using a pilot test. It obtained a Crombach's alpha value of 0.731. The observation list was developed by the World Health Organization. The data were processed using the Excel program, in order to perform the analysis of frequencies and percentages, the chi-square test was applied to identify the relationship between the study variables. Results: When applying the statistical test chi-square, it was evidenced that there is no relationship between both variables (p>0.06); 66% of the nursing professionals considered it useful and 56.5% applied the Safe Surgery Checklist. Conclusions: No relationship was found between the application of the Safe Surgery Checklist and its usefulness according to the opinion of nurses.
