Regionalisms in Juan de Arona’s Diccionario de peruanismos

Arrizabalaga C. · Boletin de Filologia (2025)

Resumen

Juan de Arona is the first lexicographer to describe some Peruvian regionalisms, although with little systematicity. This work compiles and analyzes the regionalisms considered by Arona and reviews the possible sources of his repertoire. There are a good number of Arequipeñismos, a small group of voices from his own experience in the province of Cañete and some words from Tarma, Trujillo and Piura, as well as others of less specific location. Together with the record of these voices, the eagerness to justify the voices and to explain their origin stands out. Only a few terms are accompanied by examples. Arona’s attention to regionalisms seems to have had an influence on the Peruvian lexicographical tradition, despite the limited information on regional lexicons available at the time. The openness to the regional lexicon does not prevent Arona’s consideration of the Peruvian lexicon from being guided by a Creole vision of Peruvian culture.
