Resumen
Objective: To submit for consideration some arguments for reflection for the university to promote the challenge of stimulating its critical and proactive vocation, forming highly qualified human resources, identified with the ethical values of scientific, humanistic, and technological culture. Methods: The study adopts a qualitative approach. Bibliographic material was reviewed through a systematic search in databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo and Google Scholar. Results: Scientific research and technological innovation are an essential and mandatory function of university life. Hence the need to participate individually or jointly in research projects and publish in prestigious indexed journals. It lays the foundations for formative research, an indispensable requirement for inculcating the development of research and innovation in higher education students. This is a clear demonstration that the university invests in education and promotes research and innovation. The international scientific community recognizes that the qualification of "researcher" is reflected through verifiable evidence, such as articles in scientific publications available in journals indexed in international databases. Conclusions: A researcher is a person who has demonstrated competence by concluding a research project that ends with the publication of an article, where the dissemination of new knowledge benefits the university community. Universities should improve the competencies of their students in research and innovation and train teachers in scientific writing and publication, as well as evaluate scientific production. Formative research constitutes the construction of knowledge in the classroom that, although it has an analogy in procedure with research per se, does not have the knowledge admitted as new by a given discipline.
