Reconstruction of the polemic on the «Indian» and the Peruvian nation of 1927 between José Carlos Mariátegui and Luis Alberto Sánchez; [A reconstituição da polêmica de 1927 sobre o «índio» e a nação peruana entre José Carlos Mariátegui e Luis Alberto Sánchez]

Resumen

In the summer of 1927, the famous debate on Indigenism took place in Lima between two prominent intellectuals: José Carlos Mariátegui and Luis Alberto Sánchez. In the debate, Sánchez criticized Mariátegui's nationalist thesis, calling it exclusivist, homogenizing, based on a myth of autochthony, founded on the concept of class, and refuted by history. Sánchez, by contrast, proposed a more comprehensive view of the Peruvian nation, championing the figure of the mestizo in national history. The debate also pitted Mariátegui's structural view of Peruvian history, which held an expectation of revolutionary change, against Sánchez's more nuanced and evolving historical perspective.
