Raw Material Sourcing and Inventory Management

Ordóñez F.E.C.; Orozco H.P.; Elmer A.F.; Chong M.C. · Handbook of Industrial Engineering: Concepts, Tools, Case Studies, and Applications (2026) · DOI: 10.1201/9781003620471-6

Resumen

Effective raw material sourcing and inventory management are critical for ensuring operational continuity, cost optimization, and supply chain resilience in industrial organizations. This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the concepts, practices, and technological tools related to these two functions. It explores strategies for supplier selection, stock control, demand forecasting, and warehouse performance, integrating classical and modern approaches, from Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) models to digital tools such as Warehouse Management Systems (WMS). Particular attention is given to accessible and scalable solutions applicable to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), including the use of spreadsheet-based systems supported by programming tools like Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). The chapter outlines a methodological framework for designing and implementing inventory systems tailored to the needs of resource-constrained environments. To illustrate the application of these principles, a case study is presented involving the development of a customized WMS within the energy sector, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and performance outcomes. This contribution is a practical guide for engineers, operations managers, and supply chain professionals seeking to enhance their inventory and sourcing capabilities by utilizing appropriate tools and strategies.
