Resumen

Introduction: The district of Santiago de Surco accounts for 3.84% of the population of the province of Lima and contributes 4.03% of solid waste. It is considered the most efficient district in our country in terms of solid waste management. Objective: The research evaluated the quality of compost and vermicompost produced from municipal waste and horse manure at the Santiago de Surco district waste recovery plant. Materials and methods: Descriptive comparative research, adjusted to a completely randomized design, with two compost piles (CP1 and CP2) and vermicompost piles (VC1 and VC2) as treatments, in which physical and chemical variables were evaluated. The quality control of the compost and vermicompost was carried out in accordance with Chilean, Peruvian, and Mexican technical standards. Results: Differences (p≤ 0.01) were found for all indicators evaluated, except for pH. In addition, vermicompost had higher moisture, pH, P, Ca, Mg, K, Cu, Zn, and Fe contents and lower OM and N contents compared to compost. Technical standards classify compost and vermicompost as class B according to Chilean and Peruvian standards, type II quality for compost, and first quality (P) for vermicompost according to Mexican standards. Conclusions: It is concluded that regardless of the type of amendment, both are categorized as medium quality (Class B, Type II, and First), with vermicompost slightly exceeding compost in nutritional quality. Both products have the potential to be used as amendments or substrates.
