Resumen
Introduction. The lack of efficiency in the proper disposal of medical waste derived from healthcare services has generated a serious problem, mainly based on the inefficient work of segregating solid waste, which threatens health and harms the environment. Objective. To analyze the solid waste segregation process in public hospitals to avoid risks to public health and the environment. Materials and methods. A qualitative research approach with a phenomenological design, which used a convenience sample of healthcare professionals from different hospitals in Peru, collecting data through semi-structured interviews and a participant observation guide, which allowed for a thorough analysis. Results. Deficiencies in the classification and management of hospital waste were recognized due to a lack of awareness and interest in proper segregation of such waste. Conclusions. Lack of awareness of the proper process of segregating medical waste, as well as how to properly characterize waste, lack of training for healthcare personnel, risks to health and the environment, and unnecessary high costs.
