Resumen
This research aims to analyze the relationship between public policies and strategies for the sustainable development of SMEs in Ecuador, providing details on the accessibility of credit for these companies. The research is quantitative, projecting numerical data from official institutions such as the Superintendency of Banks, the Central Bank of Ecuador, and annual provincial accounts. These data are complemented by surveys based on a previously designed questionnaire to measure the sustainability of the SMEs studied. Public policies promote the equitable distribution of credit to businesses; however, less than 1% of large companies account for 53.04% of credit, while the remaining business population, made up of small and medium-sized enterprises (99%), accounts for 30.88% of the province’s total credit portfolio. Based on these results, their success was rated as fair. Support programs are implemented as action strategies to support SMEs, with results rated as good, and in the case of Credit Guarantee Programs, with a qualitative rating of fair.
