Psychometric Properties of the Emotional Dependence Inventory Brief Form in Peruvian Adults

Aiquipa-Tello J.J. · Revista Colombiana de Psiquiatria (2025) · DOI: 10.1016/j.rcp.2025.01.007

Resumen

Objective: Emotional dependence is a relevant construct in the study of mental health and intimate partner relationships, so it is necessary to have brief and rigorous instruments for its study. The aim of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of a brief version of the Emotional Dependence Inventory (IDE-B) in an adult population. Methods: Multivariate methods were used. A total of 2,076 Peruvian adults (68% female, 32% male; (mean age = 26.5 years, SD = 7.6) participated. Results: A model of 21 items grouped into seven oblique factors presented adequate measures of fit. We also obtained indicators of empirical equivalence with the original version, evidence of measurement invariance with respect to the sex of the participants, convergent validity with intimate partner violence and self-compassion, as well as satisfactory reliability indicators. Conclusion: The IDE-B has psychometric evidence to support its use for assessment and research in the field of mental health and intimate partner relationships. In clinical practice, having the IDE-B will allow for faster assessment of emotional dependence, facilitating its use in time-limited contexts such as initial diagnosis or follow-up consultations.
