Resumen
The destruction and abandonment of immovable heritage in Peru are persistent issues in our society. This problem arises from various causes, including the inaction of the local population. This research aims to determine the reasons for the weak participation of residents and organizations in the Barrios Altos area (Cercado de Lima) in protecting public heritage spaces; these factors were analyzed within the framework of the Barrios Altos ¡Ya! Integration Network's space recovery project between 2010 and 2014. The methodology employed was based on a descriptive qualitative approach, using semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis. The main result revealed that a strong social base prioritizing the protection of immovable heritage through active neighbor participation has not been established. In conclusion, residents do not perceive the protection of immovable heritage as a personal responsibility, but rather as a task for the competent authorities.
