Proposal for Enhancing the Delivery System Through Cross Docking and Optimization Algorithms in an Office Supplies Retail Company

Andrade-Fernandez D.J.; Flores-Mejia B.D.; Leon-Chavarri C.C.; Chavez-Ugaz R. · Congreso Internacional de Innovacion y Tendencias en Ingenieria, CONIITI (2025) · DOI: 10.1109/coniiti68560.2025.11366175

Resumen

In response to the increasing pressure for faster, more reliable deliveries in the office supply retail sector, this study proposes an integrated optimization model aimed at reducing delivery times, minimizing delays, and improving logistical efficiency. The model is applied to a leading Peruvian retailer with a 47% market share, which faces persistent inefficiencies: an average delivery time of 26.68 hours, over 30% of orders arriving late, and annual losses exceeding USD 100,667 due to suboptimal route planning and poor synchronization between inbound and outbound flows. To address these issues, the proposed solution combines two complementary solutions. First, a cross-docking system implemented to eliminate intermediate storage and enhance throughput by accelerating handling operations. Second, an Ant Colony Optimization algorithm developed to dynamically generate delivery routes within the congested and irregular urban network of the city of Lima, Peru, continuously reinforcing efficient paths under real-time conditions. The model’s effectiveness was validated through 37 Arena simulation replications, demonstrating a 27.5% improvement in delivery times, reducing the average to approximately 19 hours. Overall, this study delivers measurable, replicable gains and offers a practical roadmap for transforming logistics operations, enhancing customer satisfaction, and strengthening competitive positioning in an increasingly demanding market.
