Resumen
The article analyzes the geometric redesign of an existing three-lane interior roundabout, transforming it into a turbo spiral design roundabout, a model that has been extensively adapted in cities in the Netherlands. The main objective of this redesign is to reduce the length of vehicle queues, reduce vehicle delays and improve the service levels of the road infrastructure. To support this proposal, a microscopic traffic simulation was carried out using the Vissim 9 software, carried out at the university facilities. The research was based on the Roundabouts - Application and design manual, a technical document of European origin. This manual establishes a methodology in three main stages: first, data collection on vehicular traffic in the study area was carried out; This data was then processed and analyzed to design the geometry of the new roundabout; and, finally, the levels of service (LOS) of the existing design were compared with the measures of the proposed model. The results obtained indicated significant improvements of 28.98% in east and west access, a decrease of 9.17 s per vehicle in vehicle delays and improvement in the level of service (LOS) from C to B. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2026.
