Resumen

In Peru, the supply of academic programmes in biomedical engineering is limited, which places the country at a disadvantage with respect to global and regional development. In response to this need, students at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos created the Biomentoring Program in 2021 to introduce high school students to biomedical engineering and foster their interest in this constantly evolving discipline. The methodology was based on the project-based learning approach, cooperative and collaborative learning, and educational gamification. They worked in collaborative groups of secondary school students, called Mentees, together with university students and professionals, called Biomentors. As a result, in 2021, this initiative provided the opportunity for 34 Biomentores and more than 100 Mentees from various regions of Peru to improve their knowledge, skills and innovation capacity in STEM and Biomedical Engineering.
