Process Safety Indicators on Mining - Focus on Geotechnical Asset

de Souza Mello J.; Meneggati Esperandio B.; Nascimento Mendes Bezerra F. · 10th Latin American Conference on Process Safety 2024, CCPS 2024 (2024)

Resumen

After the occurrence of major industrial accidents, it was observed that most occupational indicators did not reflect an improvement in the prevention of serious industrial accidents. The monitoring of process safety performance began in the oil & gas and petrochemical industries, which supported the development of international references such as the Process Safety Indicators Guide of the Center for Chemical Processes Safety (CCPS) and the standard of the American Institute of Petroleum (API 754). After tailings storage facilities failures, like the one that occurred in Brumadinho, we percept that mineral sector production chain has characteristics that could result in major accidents, with major consequences as P-36 Platform explosion - Brazil (2001), sugar refinery explosion - Georgia (2008), coal mine accident - China (2014), and others. On this way, Vale have been working daily to identify lessons learned in Brumadinho, to drive the cultural transformation on the company, adoption the concept of process safety events, foment the application of continuous improvement in its management system and reduce risk event of various operational natures. By identifying, recording and handling these process safety events, Vale aims to transform the company's safety culture, by adding to current practices other actions that can promote the prevention of potential serious industrial accidents, bringing visibility to the leadership. © CCPS 2024.All rights reserved.
