Problem solving with Polya’s mathematical method: The adventure of learning

Vásquez Q.; Jacinto A.; Tarrillo H.; Enrique H. · Revista de Ciencias Sociales (2022) · DOI: 10.31876/rcs.v28i.38146

Resumen

Problem solving is the potential center of mathematics, its ability to develop thinking and analytical reasoning in human beings. The purpose of this study is to analyze the effects of the implementation of Polya’s method in mathematical problem solving in first year high school students belonging to a particular educational center in Lima, Peru. The methodology used is quantitative, the hypothetical deductive method and quasi-experimental design. A sample of 60 students belonging to the first year of high school of a private school in Lima was taken; a survey was applied for data collection and two knowledge tests were used as instruments, “pre-test” before the application of the Polya method, and “post-test”. The results show the existence of significant statistical differences in the “pre-test” and “post-test” tests, which was obtained thanks to the application of the statistician, the differences were of small effect in the students of the experimental group compared to the effects that it should cause, according to the literature reviewed. It is concluded that, if there is no adequate follow-up such as constant feedback and individualized support, the initial improvement results will not be sustained
