Resumen

Introduction: Evidence on noncommunicable diseases in Andean-Amazonian cities is limited. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of unhealthy lifestyles, cardiometabolic risk, and psychosocial vulnerability among adults residing in the urban area of Chachapoyas, and to describe their distribution by sex and age group. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults aged 18 years or older residing in the urban area of Chachapoyas, Peru. Two-stage probabilistic sampling was used, with one adult selected per household. Questionnaires were administered to assess smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, mental health, food insecurity, risk of obstructive sleep apnea, and risk of type 2 diabetes, in addition to anthropometric and blood pressure measurements. Results: A total of 3663 participants were analyzed; after weighting, the sample represented 19,700 adults. The most frequent unhealthy behaviors were inadequate fruit and vegetable intake at 91.0%, short sleep duration at 80.4%, and low physical activity at 66.0%; 47.9% accumulated four or more unhealthy behaviors. Abdominal obesity according to IDF/JIS was 63.0%, and overall hypertension was 28.2%; among those without a previous diagnosis, 20.6% had hypertension detected during the survey. Significant depressive symptoms, significant anxiety, high perceived stress, and food insecurity were 6.2%, 19.4%, 21.2%, and 72.4%, respectively. Conclusions: Among adults in urban areas of Chachapoyas, a concurrent burden of unhealthy behaviors, central adiposity, unrecognized hypertension, and psychosocial vulnerability was observed, supporting the need for screening, prevention, and follow-up strategies.
