Resumen

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and frequency of the forms of presentation of Enzootic Bovine Leukosis (EBL) in dairy farms in the province of Lima. A total of 354 dairy cows from 16 farms were evaluated. The animals were diagnosed as seropositive using a competitive ELISA with blood serum samples. The diagnosis of lymphocytosis (high: >7500 lymphocytes/µL and very high: >10 000 lymphocytes/µL) was conducted by counting in a Neubauer chamber with blood samples and the presence of palpable lymphomegaly was detected through clinical examination. The results showed a seropositivity frequency of 52.3 ± 5.2%. In seropositive animals, a frequency of 14.7 ± 3.7% of lymphocytosis and 1.4 ± 1.2% of palpable lymphomegaly was found. There was a significant association between age groups and seropositivity (p<0.001), lymphocytosis (p=0.03) and very high lymphocytosis (p=0.03), showing that older animals had higher possibility of being affected. The prevalence of palpable lymphomegaly did not show a significant relationship with the age groups. Of the 185 infected animals, 28.1 ± 6.5% presented lymphocytosis. 13.5 ± 4.9% of the seropositive animals presented high lymphocytosis and 14.6 ± 5.1% very high lymphocytosis, the distribution between age groups being non-significant (p=0.24 and p=0.91, respectively). In conclusion, the prevalence of EBL virus seropositivity in Lima dairy farms was 52.26%, the prevalence of lymphocytosis was 14.7% and the prevalence of palpable lymphomegaly was 1.4%, with an association between seropositivity and lymphocytosis with age groups. © Los autores.
