Resumen
Introduction: Intimate partner violence against women is a social and public health problem that is still prevalent around the world. The objective was to determine the prevalence and sociodemographic characteristics associated with intimate partner violence against women in Peru. Methods: A cross-sec-tional, analytical, and retrospective study was conducted on a sample of 21.518 women aged 15 to 49 years from all departments of the country. The data were obtained from the open access database of the Demographic and Family Health Survey, applied by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics of Peru in 2019. Results: The general prevalence of intimate partner violence against female was 58.0%; psychological and physical being the most frequent types with 50.5% and 28.8%; respectively. The sample was characterized by a predominance of age between 25 to 34 years (43.2%), secondary education level (44.7%), low economic level (55.8%), urban place of residence (68.8%) and Castilian ethnicity (90.0%). The department of origin (p<0.001), the age under 25 years and over 34 years (p<0.001), lower level of education (p<0.001), the lowest economic level (p<0.001) and the ethnic groups Aguaruna and Quechua (p<0.001); were associated with the highest prevalence of violence. Conclusions: More than half of the women in Peru presented at least one type of intimate partner violence, mainly psychological and phys-ical; the same ones that were related to some sociodemographic characteristics of the woman.
