Resumen
INTRODUCTION. Births mark unforgettable and happy moments in the world; However, unforeseen complications can arise during the postpartum period, which is called severe maternal morbidity, and can mean the difference between maternal life and death. OBJECTIVE. To describe maternal experiences reported in the literature in relation to severe maternal morbidity. METHODOLOGY. Scoping review carried out between 2018 and 2024, in the databases: Alicia, Virtual Health Library, Redalyc, Pubmed, and Google Scholar, which met the inclusion criteria: original studies published in Spanish, Portuguese, and English in women with extreme postpartum morbidity. The recommendations of the PRISMA 2020 methodology were followed. RESULTS. 11 articles were included in the review, of which 10 were qualitative and 01 quantitative, which met the established criteria. A characterization of the articles and the mothers is presented. The thematic category derived was immediate reaction (changes in the body, life opportunities, and the emergence of emotions) and mediate consequences (adaptation to changes and negative consequences). Mothers during the postpartum period and in the face of extreme maternal morbidity present important emotional changes that require nursing and family support to promote recovery and quality of life. CONCLUSIONS. The experiences of hospitalized mothers with extreme morbidity are described as contradictory emotions and require the emotional support necessary for their recovery.
