Popular Transport in the Social Production of the Urban Periphery in Lima-Callao; [O transporte popular na produção social da periferia urbana em Lima-Callao]

Vega-Centeno P.; Robert J.; Ponce-Romero C. · Revista INVI (2026) · DOI: 10.5354/0718-8358.2026.78676

Resumen

Popular or informal transport is often studied as the provision of a service, which is generally understood as an exogenous action to the processes of habitat production. This article argues that this type of transport service is an important dimension in the social production of habitat in urban peripheries. To this end, it approaches the role of the operators of these services in the way in which the urban space is enabled and maintained, as well as their condition as inhabitants of the periphery. The analysis shows that popular transport operators participate directly or indirectly in the material and social production of urban space as they are part of the popular habitat. The text is based on an exploratory qualitative study carried out in three peripheral neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of Lima-Callao, in Peru, through interviews complemented with some ethnographic observations.
