POLITICAL COMMUNICATION IN PERU: Between the crisis of the parties, political instability, and the central role of media and networks

Macassi S. · The Routledge Handbook of Political Communication in Ibero- America (2024) · DOI: 10.4324/9781003388937-33

Resumen

This chapter analyzes the production of political communication about the situation of the political system and the crises that constitute it in Peru. The review of the literature establishes the influence that political processes had on the media characteristics and the digital environment, but also how these communication platforms frame the communication processes of politicians and citizens. For this purpose, publications on political communication are reviewed in four dimensions: the role of the media in elections, presidential debates, the use of social media candidates in elections, and the use of social media by civil society. Our conclusions suggest that the deep crisis of the Peruvian political system creates a vacuum of intermediation that is covered by conventional media and, more recently, by social media that operates between the population and politicians.
