Resumen
The roofing systems of 17th-century viceregal architecture in Lima have primarily been studied from a historical point of view, with a focus on the work’s date and style, as well as authorship. However, the execution of the layout and its correspondence with the treatises circulating in Lima have yet to be studied, even though texts on construction have been found in the libraries of master builders working in Lima. This study compares 17th-century carpentry treatises with archival documents and a contemporary work. It finds that Fray Lorenzo de San Nicolás’ treatise was used as a reference for constructing the planked timber vaults of the chapel of the Inquisition and the graduation hall of the National University of San Marcos..
