Resumen
Planetary health, which recognises the interconnectedness of human health and the stability of Earth’s natural systems, is an urgent priority for healthcare. Primary care, with its holistic, community-oriented, and longitudinal approach, is uniquely positioned to address the health impacts of environmental degradation and to advance sustainable healthcare practices. This chapter argues for the critical integration of planetary health principles into primary care research. It explores how this emerging field is essential for understanding climate-related health risks, from heat stress and vector-borne diseases to mental health impacts such as eco-anxiety and solastalgia. The discussion highlights key research areas, including building climate-resilient primary care systems, developing planetary health education for practitioners, and promoting sustainable, low-carbon care models that reduce unnecessary interventions and empower patients. A central theme is the pursuit of health equity, ensuring that research and subsequent interventions protect vulnerable populations who bear the greatest burden of environmental change. By bridging these domains, primary care research can translate planetary health from a global concept into local, actionable solutions, fostering a healthcare system that is both adaptive and sustainable for future generations.
