Physiological responses of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) fry, a non-native invasive species, to chronic exposure to high temperatures

Santillan E.T.; Alvarez-Bejar G.O. · Revista Peruana de Biologia (2025) · DOI: 10.15381/rpb.v32i3.29494

Resumen

This study evaluated the effects of three chronic exposure temperatures (26, 30, and 34 °C) on the physiological responses of tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) fry and analysed the possible implications of these findings for Amazonian fish species in the context of global warming. Growth rate, oxygen consumption, and thermal tolerance of tilapia increased with temperature, reaching the highest performance at 34 °C. These results demonstrate the species’ high metabolic capacity to withstand elevated thermal stress. In contrast, previous studies on native Amazonian fishes indicate a limited ability for acclimation and thermal tolerance, placing them at a competitive disadvantage compared to invasive species under increasing temperature conditions. In conclusion, rising temperature enhances the physiological performance of tilapia while simultaneously increasing the vulnerability of native Amazonian fish species. © Los autores.
