PERITONEAL DIALYSIS EDUCATION: A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE

Moretta G.; Marcos S.; Chaud R.; Bastos K.; Minaya C.A.; Divino-Filho J.C. · Issues in Kidney Disease - Dialysis (2021)

Resumen

This chapter aims to bring the education sciences closer to the health workers. It will review the educational training contents that peritoneal dialysis patients must learn, with a focus on adult education and the development of skills or competencies. Moreover, it will present an assessment tool for the lessons learned, allowing communication among the health team members and, above all, for the patient to assess if she/he still needs to learn about chronic kidney diseases and peritoneal dialysis or if she/he is already an expert. If we consider therapeutic education a pillar of peritoneal dialysis, we must understand the need for evaluation of the educational program of the different institutions that train patients and propose the necessary steps required to initiate it. The focus will be on (I) Curriculum content and learning evaluation of peritoneal dialysis patients’ educational programs; (II) The importance of the evaluation of PD educational programs; (III) Therapeutic education and training of the health team for educational programs in peritoneal dialysis; and (IV) Review of some peritoneal dialysis learning experiences in Latin America.
