Performance of Sawdust and Gypsum Composite C- Shaped Blocks: Property Evaluation for Sustainable Housing Solutions

ROJAS VIDAL P.R.; Valderrama Y.P.M.; Brancacho Y.Y.C.; Santos Z.L.B. · Lecture Notes in Civil Engineering (2026) · DOI: 10.1007/978-981-95-7618-0_6

Resumen

This study presents an innovative alternative for the sustainable construction through the use of C- shaped blocks, composite of sawdust, gypsum and cement. The design of C-shape facilitates the assembly, optimizes the times and reduces the costs, desirable qualities for projects of housing sustainable and affordable to the community. To evaluate its feasibility, three types of mixtures were developed, varying the proportions of sawdust, wood waste, gypsum, and cement. Each mixture underwent rigorous compression resistance tests, conducted under controlled laboratory conditions. The results showed that the mixture with 60% cement, 20% gypsum, 10% wood waste, and 10% sawdust performed the best. This configuration withstood the demolding process without fracturing and demonstrated mechanical properties suitable for supporting loads in residential buildings. The “C” shaped block not only contributes to environmental sustainability by utilizing recycled materials, but it can also improve energy efficiency in buildings by offering favorable thermal properties. With these findings and the viable patent application with the World Intellectual Property Organization [1], the “C” block is proposed as a viable alternative in the ecological construction sector, aligning with global objectives for reducing environmental impact and promoting the circular economy in the industry. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2026.
