Resumen
This research is based on previous experimental studies on two internal combustion engines, using nine fuels analyzed for their physicochemical properties. Also, is based on a methodology to estimate the energy quality of gaseous fuels and fuel's availability to produce work in spark-ignition engines. The methodology is combined with the standard methodology to measure the methane number of gaseous fuels, to define fuel's exergy in internal combustion engines. It is defined that fuel's exergy depends on fuel's availability to produce work by its chemical composition limited by fuel's knocking resistance. It is estimated that gaseous fuels (biogas and natural gas) have higher exergy than liquid fuels (diesel and gasoline).
