Resumen
Introduction Atopic dermatitis is characterized as an immune-mediated pruritic dermatosis with eczematous, polymorphic lesions, following a chronic and relapsing course, and exhibiting a high degree of clinical heterogeneity. Methods In order to determine whether there is an association between the presence of papular lesions on the elbows and knees and atopic dermatitis, a prospective, cross-sectional, comparative, and observational study was conducted over the course of one year at a referral hospital in northern Peru. The study was approved by the hospital’s ethics committee, and written informed consent was obtained from the patients, parents and/or legal guardians. Results A total of 177 patients were studied: 59 with atopic dermatitis and 118 controls. It was found that 44.8% presented with papular lesions on the elbows and knees; however, no statistically significant association was found between these clinical findings and atopic dermatitis. Conclusion No association was found between these clinical findings and atopic dermatitis.
