Overall Equipment Efficiency in the Manufacturing Industry: A Systematic Review

Romani N.; Chumpe J.E.; Velasquez A.G.; Alca M.E. · Proceedings of the LACCEI international Multi-conference for Engineering, Education and Technology (2024) · DOI: 10.18687/laccei2024.1.1.1930

Resumen

In the context of global competition and constant changes in the manufacturing industry, Overall Equipment Efficiency (OEE) stands out as a key performance indicator (KPI) in manufacturing processes, often poorly understood at the time of its implementation. This is why we pose the following question using the PICO methodology: What are the main problems of low efficiency and results found in the manufacturing industry regarding OEE measurement?, which allows structuring the problem systematically. Subsequently, to improve information management, the PRISMA diagram was used to select suitable articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria in the Scopus database, resulting in 33 articles directly addressing the OEE topic out of a total of 342. Therefore, this systematic review highlights the importance of addressing this issue and emphasizes the positive influence of approaches such as Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Industry 4.0 technology in the correct use of OEE. Additionally, other key performance metrics such as TEEP, OMI, OPE, among others, are identified, while they differ in detail from OEE, they often stem from it as a fundamental basis, indicating that OEE is highly customizable depending on its objective or industry. The conclusions emphasize the importance of addressing challenges associated with deficient implementations and underscore the need to standardize OEE adoption comprehensively. There is a need for research that strengthens the existing literature on OEE and effective implementation strategies to improve efficiency in the manufacturing industry.
