Organized Crime in Perú: Dynamics and Social Impact

Villanueva-Riccer R.T.; Reyes-Sagastegui R.A. · Clio. Revista de Historia, Ciencias Humanas y Pensamiento Critico. (2025) · DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.14567064

Resumen

Organized crime has been constantly evolving, becoming one of the greatest threats to political, economic and social stability worldwide, and Peru has been no exception. Since the 1980s, with the presence of criminal groups such as Sendero Luminoso and the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement, a process of weakening of the State and strengthening of criminal activity has taken place, which has spread over time, leading to the proliferation of clandestine criminal gangs and others of transnational renown. In this context, Peru has experienced changes and intensifications in the way organized crime is conducted, which has undermined confidence in democratic institutions, increasing vulnerabilities and giving rise to major social problems. For this reason, the purpose of this paper is to examine the peculiarities of organized crime in Peru, focusing on its structure and its capacity to adapt to the social environment. Through a qualitative, documentary and interdisciplinary research, the causes and consequences of this phenomenon for the nation are analyzed. Finally, it is concluded that it is necessary to address organized crime from its foundations, proposing strategies for its permanent suppression.
