Organic Pollutants and Plastics Threatening the Ocean’s Health: An Urgent Issue

Arias A.H.; Girones L.; Oliva A.L.; Marcovecchio J.E.; Valdivia A.L.; Malafaia G. · Marine Ecology: An Ecosystemic View of Anthropogenic Impacts: Volume 2 (2025) · DOI: 10.1201/9781003024613-5

Resumen

Oceans are increasingly being threatened by human activities, including urbanization, industrialization, and agricultural practices. This chapter addresses the critical environmental challenge posed by plastic and organic pollutants in the marine ecosystems, highlighting the alarming decline in marine biodiversity due to contaminants such as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) which accumulate through the food web, posing risks to both marine life and human health. While developing countries face heightened vulnerability due to inadequate waste management and rapid population growth, regulatory frameworks like the Stockholm and Basel Conventions aim to mitigate these impacts but challenges remain with emerging pollutants. Calls for immediate action to implement effective management strategies to protect ocean health are discussed, emphasizing the interconnectedness of human well-being and marine ecosystems. Through comprehensive research and international cooperation, it is crucial to address these pressing issues to ensure the sustainability of marine resources for future generations.
