Resumen

The effect of organic mulching on the cultivation of avocado (Persea americana Mill.) Fuerte variety in Moquegua, Peru was evaluated. We worked on a seven-year-old plot, a 5x5 planting frame and under gravity irrigation. The randomized complete block design (DBCA) was used with four treatments (T0: control without mulch or manure, T1: alfalfa mulch with manure, T2: oat mulch with manure and T3: elephant grass mulch with manure), with an approximate weight of 12 t/ha for mulch and 10 t/ha for manure, and in three repetitions. Each experimental unit had two rows of six plants each; in total there were 72 plants in an area of 1800 m2. The trial lasted twenty months and evaluated yield and fruit size, presence of weeds and effects on soil properties. For the conditions of Moquegua, the use of mulch in the cultivation of Fuerte variety avocado increased the yield, size and number of fruits per plant; in weeds there was a reduction of 59%. Likewise, in the physicochemical properties of the soil, the organic matter content, apparent density and pH improved, with the exception of CEC, where no differences were determined (p>0.05).
