Optimizing Equipment Availability in Textile Manufacturing Through Training, Planned Maintenance, SMED and Machine Learning

Cubas-Juscamaita J.L.; Avelino-Salazar M.; Maradiegue-Tuesta F.; Pinzón-Hoyos F. · Proceedings of the International Conference on Mechanical and Intelligent Manufacturing Technologies, ICMIMT (2026) · DOI: 10.1109/icmimt69639.2026.11642806

Resumen

This article analyzes a Peruvian company dedicated to the manufacture of men's polo shirts, which has experienced a constant decline in profits over the last five years of operation. This trend worsened in 2023, when profits decreased by 15.6% compared to 2022, due to low equipment availability in the manufacturing area, which operates at 59% of its capacity. Therefore, the company must adopt immediate measures to optimize the efficiency of its equipment, reduce lengthy setup times, and train operators in its proper operation. In this context, a model based on Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is proposed - specifically on the pillars of training and coaching, and planned maintenance -, the SMED methodology and Machine Learning techniques to improve the equipment availability indicator and achieve the objective of increasing equipment availability in the manufacturing area from the current 59% to 78%. This is reflected in the improvement of production capacity and profits through the implementation of these methodologies and the training of operating personnel.
