Resumen
The objective of this study was to optimize the ultrasound assisted extraction of caffeine from dried leaves of Ilex guayusa Loes using the response surface methodology. The effect of ultrasonic amplitude, time and temperature on caffeine extraction was evaluated using a 23-factorial design. An optimal-combined design was used for the optimization. The conditions that maximized caffeine extraction (1.589%) were: ultrasonic amplitude 55.99%, time 29.17 min and temperature 58.88°C. Due to the present findings, aqueous extracts of I. guayusa can be proposed as a promising component for natural energy drinks.
