Ocean Microbiome: The Influence of Viruses On Marine Ecosystems

Villalobos M.; Cardona L.; Lovatón A. · South sustainability (2025) · DOI: 10.21142/ss-0601-2025-e122

Resumen

Bacteriophages, viruses that infect microorganisms in marine ecosystems, play an essential role in the regulating of microbial populations. Through the process of cell lysis, they release dissolved organic carbon, directly influencing biogeochemical cycles and ocean dynamics associated with climate change. Marine viruses include those that target microscopic algae and others that infect pathogenic bacteria, displaying remarkable diversity and functional specificity. In this policy brief, we recommend the promotion of scientific research focused upon the diversity and ecological role of marine viruses in Peruvian waters, as well as the strengthening of international collaboration, in order to harness their potential for climate change mitigation and the conservation of marine ecosystems. © Los autores, 2024.
